I went sightseeing in Kyoto from November 21, 2021 to 23rd this time. As I had time, I visited temples and shrines which are especially famous for autumn leaves, so I would like you to refer to them in the future.
The time I visited seemed to be a little earlier than the best time to see autumn leaves. Even so, it was good that I was able to enjoy a satisfying sightseeing. The season is coming up, so I hope you will enjoy Kyoto in autumn while there are few foreigners due to corona.
Tips for sightseeing in Kyoto in autumn
There are many famous places for viewing autumn leaves, but it is better to go to the best place to see them.
Because there are special circumstances at this time of the year, such as illumination and advance reservation, research in advance is essential.
Anyone would like to visit the autumn leaves sightseeing spots at their best. It coincides with the school trip. Therefore, it is the busiest time of the year. It’s hard to slow down and take pictures from the best angle. Based on this, it is necessary to shift the time and timing.
Introduction of each sightseeing spot
Eikando
Admission: 1000 yen for lunch, 600 yen for dinner
Recommended degree :★★★★★
Level of congestion: Very crowded (On both Sunday morning and weekday night)
Colored: A portion is best to see
The Eikando is so famous for autumn leaves. The colored leaves on both sides of the road and on both sides of the stairs create a tunnel of autumn leaves. During the day, you can see the autumn leaves from the Amitabha in the main hall and in the highlands. The lighting around the pond is especially beautiful at night. It’s hard to tell day and night. It’s just like Eikando in autumn.
Shinnyo-do
Admission: Free
Recommended degree :★★★☆☆
Level of congestion: Relatively empty (Sunday noon)
Colouring: Beginning of coloring
It is very cozy and has a minor beauty that cannot be taken for granted. It is located at the top of a hill near Nanzen-ji Temple in Higashiyama. It is quite large in scale, but it is quite far from the nearest bus stop, so it is difficult to access. The autumn leaves and the cherry blossoms in spring are beautiful, so if you go sightseeing in the Higashiyama area, you might want to go there by the way.
Nanzen-ji Temple
Entrance Fee: Free, Garden Paid
Recommended degree :★★☆☆☆
Level of congestion: crowded (Sunday morning)
Colored: Not yet
A temple with a famous aqueduct and a large temple gate. It is next to Eikando, but the autumn leaves are not there yet. Although there were no autumn leaves around Suidobashi, it was full of tourists. It would be better off in the off-season to take pictures here. You can pass the paid garden to see how the leaves turn. Some people say that he was satisfied with Eikando. If it’s your first time to see it, you should go by the way. There is no charge to the Suidobashi area.
Kifune-jinja Shrine
Admission: Free
Recommended degree :★★★☆☆
Level of congestion: Very crowded (Sunday noon)
Colored: A portion is best to see
You can get there from the city unexpectedly quickly by Eizan Railway. Since it was a mountain, the temperature was a little low and it was cold. There is a bus service from the nearest station to the shrine, but when you heard that the autumn leaves on the mountain path were beautiful, you chose to walk for 30 minutes. Hmm. I thought it was colored because it was a mountain, but it wasn’t. The end is pretty tough. The staircase lined with the famous torii and toro is spectacular. If I were allowed to wish, it would have been even better if the area around the top of the torii had turned red. Generally speaking, it was not so colored, but there was a very long line for praying. The mikuji floating on the water is also characteristic. What was disappointing was the back hall located further up. Compared to the main hall, it is relatively lonely, but the mountain path is quite a long way to go, so it is exhausting. I regret that I chose to walk on the way back.
Kodai-ji Temple
Admission: 500 yen
Recommended degree :★★★★★
Level of congestion: Slightly crowded (Sunday night)
Colored: A portion is best to see
A few years ago, during the day, even when it was not the season for autumn leaves, I admired the beauty of the garden, but still did not disappoint. Together with the sense of illumination, the autumn leaves reflected in the pond are wonderful. I thought the projection mapping of the rock garden was a fait accompli, but other than that, you can enjoy the beautiful illumination of the worship road. You can visit the shrine until relatively late at night, so it is also elegant to visit at the end of the day to sober up.
Entoku-in Temple
Admission: 900 yen with Kodai-ji Temple
Recommended degree :★★★★☆
Degree of congestion: empty (Sunday night)
Colouring: Beginning of coloring
It is a sub-temple across from Kodai-ji Temple with two types of gardens. Kodai-ji Temple was quite crowded, but this one is quite empty, and the point is that you can enjoy the view of the garden while sitting comfortably. The structure of the building was like a ninja house and I felt it was interesting. If you have time, I recommend you to go with Kodai-ji Temple.
Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple
Admission: 1000 yen
Recommended degree :★★★☆☆
Level of congestion: Slightly crowded (weekdays)
Colored: A portion is best to see
Enryaku-ji Temple is the only temple in Shiga Prefecture that is included among Kyoto’s World Heritage sites. From Hieizan Sakamoto Station it is a 30 minute walk to the top of the mountain via Japan’s longest cable car. This is also a mountain, so it’s a little chilly. There were many elderly people because it was a weekday. The leaves begin to turn red. The main hall of Enryaku-ji Temple, the Konpon-chudo Hall, was being renovated on a large scale surrounded by prefabricated buildings, which was even more disappointing. It would have been better if the mountain road were full of autumn leaves, but it wasn’t that far. The Toto area was explored as a building. There are sightseeing spots in other areas as well, but it takes a long time to get there, so I just took a walk in this area and went down. Personally, I felt that it was the most enjoyable thing to strike the bell.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Admission: 400 yen
Recommended degree :★★★★★
Level of congestion: Very crowded (weekday lunch)
Colored: Some of them are good for viewing
This temple is probably referred to as the royal road and supreme power. There are many tourists and many students on school trips, so it is quite crowded, but photo spots can be secured relatively by making concessions. At the time of the photo, the color is still starting to change, so I can’t help but feel the potential to enjoy more. I have a feeling that the night light up will start from the next week and I can feel even more excitement. To be honest, I didn’t really want to go to temples that I had been to several times because they were too royal, but I only felt that famous temples had their own charm.
Enko-ji Temple
Admission: 1000 yen
Recommended degree :★★★★★
Level of congestion: crowded (weekday lunch)
Colored: A portion is best to see
A temple that requires reservation. However, when I actually went there, I was told that it was possible to visit without reservation. The best thing to see is the view of the garden from the inside like a picture frame. There were crowds of people, but everyone was in the back of the room, so as not to get into other people’s angles of view. The bamboo forest folding screen painted by Okyo MARUYAMA was seen as a surprise attack. Of course, the famous picture frame garden was wonderful, but I was also satisfied with the view of the autumn leaves and the town from the mountain behind the building, taking advantage of the mountainous terrain.
Shisendo
Admission: 500 yen
Recommended degree :★★★★
Level of congestion: Slightly crowded (weekday lunch)
Coloring: Beautiful
I stopped at the nearby Shisendo to adjust the bus schedule from Enko-ji Temple to Ohara. I thought it was a hall where you can see a typical Japanese garden, but the color of the leaves was just right and the roundly cut planting was also characteristic. There was an unexpectedly large garden behind the Japanese garden, which in a good way disappointed me. There was a sense of satisfaction.
sanzenin temples (Hosen-in)
Admission: 700 yen
Recommended degree :★★★★★
Level of congestion: crowded (weekday lunch)
Coloring: Beautiful
It is located in Ohara which is difficult to access. It was cold in the mountains, but I heard that the color had changed compared to other areas. In spite of the greenery, the autumn colors were better than in the city, and the moss on the ground, combined with the autumn colors, created a beautiful landscape. Compared to other temples, there were several straight trees that accentuated the scenery. The hospital was large, and I could have plum tea for free when I went up a little. There were a lot of tourists, but it was the only unique view and I was very satisfied.
regret point of this trip
It was late for the reservation competition of Rurikoin.
He spent a lot of money on transportation and walked on mountain roads, which caused him to accumulate fatigue.
Due to the geographical conditions of Kyoto and the trip to the mountains, it sometimes gets quite cold at this time of the year, but they misdressed.
